What is El Cielo?
El Cielo is located in northeast Mexico and
it was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1985 due to its richness in biodiversity. This reserve includes the northernmost cloud
forest in the North American continent and it is located only 20 minutes from Mante in the State of Tamulipas, Mexico.
The predominant economic activity of the region before it became a reserve was the logging industry. New alternatives
of income had to be developed for local inhabitants. Numerous projects have been supported by NGO´s, Local, State and
Federal Mexican government as well as individuals.
Local inhabitants have been trained as butterfly/ bird watching guides,
aiming to enhance the conservation awareness and the generation of an alternative source of income through nature watching
tourism.
